Matchmaking Students and Hospitalists: Promoting Scholarship, and Mentors With Vignettes
Back to course
Pdf Summary
This project addressed a lack of structure in matching 4th-year medical students with hospitalists for clinical case vignette (CCV) writing and submission. Before the initiative, students had limited resources and knowledge about CCV development, while hospitalists’ clinical workload often limited their ability to engage in academic writing. The goal was to create a structured matchmaking process that used hospitalist expertise and student availability to improve the CCV experience and increase submissions.

The program linked students and hospitalists through a CCV leader who invited participants, matched mentors with students, and provided submission guidelines and example cases. The initiative was designed to benefit both groups: students gained experience in clinical reasoning, diagnostic reasoning, academic writing, and conference presenting, while hospitalists gained scholarly activity opportunities, mentorship roles, and academic meeting involvement.

Survey results showed strong satisfaction among participants. All students responded to the survey, and most hospitalists did as well. Reported satisfaction was high across areas such as ease of participation, case selection, mentoring relationship, feedback on clinical reasoning, and feedback on academic writing. Students also reported increased confidence in recognizing cases worth writing up, creating learning objectives, writing discussions, developing posters, and presenting at poster competitions. Hospitalists reported increased mentoring confidence and engagement.

The project concluded that CCV matchmaking increased both clinical vignette submissions and abstract acceptance. All participants recommended the experience to others. Future steps include expanding the program beyond 4th-year students, strengthening hospitalist mentorship training, growing the case repository, and further expanding report writing and submission efforts.
