Long Term Follow-Up of a Faculty Point-of-Care Ultrasound Program
Back to course
Pdf Summary
This study evaluated long-term outcomes among 89 faculty graduates of a point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) course offered from 2018 to 2023. The goal was to identify traits linked to sustained POCUS proficiency and use, in order to improve training and institutional support.

A total of 52% of graduates completed a follow-up test and survey. Overall median test score was 73%, with scores ranging from 31% to 100%. Participants reported the greatest confidence in lung image acquisition and most commonly used ultrasound for ascites and dyspnea.

A key finding was the impact of completing an image portfolio. All 11 participants who completed a portfolio reported actively teaching POCUS, compared with 65% of those who did not. Portfolio completers also had significantly higher test scores than non-completers (median 92% vs 65%, p=0.01). They reported higher confidence in image acquisition and interpretation across body systems, especially lung and abdomen imaging, and described more facilitators and fewer barriers to POCUS practice. In contrast, non-completers commonly reported low confidence and barriers such as limited time to practice or scan.

The study also found that graduates who were more likely to use POCUS for dyspnea scored higher than non-users (81% vs 65%, p=0.01).

Overall, the authors conclude that image portfolio completion is associated with better knowledge, greater confidence, more frequent use, and more teaching of POCUS. They recommend making portfolio completion an important goal for future POCUS course graduates.
