Pdf Summary
This project addressed a gap in training for medical students transitioning from preclinical study to clinical clerkships, specifically in interpreting and managing common electrolyte abnormalities on inpatient wards. Since hospitalists frequently precept third-year students and electrolyte issues are a routine part of inpatient care, the authors created a focused educational module for incoming third-year medical students.

The intervention was a 50-minute virtual session co-developed by an MS4 and a hospitalist clinician-educator and delivered to five groups of about 35 students each. The session used the primacy-latency framework, incorporating reflection, brief teaching on common electrolyte disorders, five clinical vignettes, and a summary/Q&A segment, with a handout provided for reinforcement. Students completed pre- and post-session surveys and knowledge tests assessing both comfort and medical knowledge related to electrolyte abnormalities.

Results showed that the module significantly improved students’ knowledge and confidence in handling commonly encountered electrolyte problems on the wards. The authors conclude that educational interventions grounded in sound teaching principles can effectively prepare students for inpatient responsibilities. They also highlight that hospitalists, especially those with expertise in medical education and curriculum design, are well positioned to develop and deliver this kind of clerkship preparation.
