Learning to Be Better Ward Teachers: A Novel Innovation to Enhance Hospitalists' Educator Skills

Pdf Summary
Learning to be Better Ward Teachers (LTBBWT) is an annual, half-day faculty development conference created by Emory University’s Division of Hospital Medicine to strengthen hospitalists’ educator skills. The program was developed in response to several challenges: many academic hospitalists want to improve as clinical teachers, but have limited time to learn through experience, often receive little formal training, and may not be able to attend expensive external faculty development programs due to budget and scheduling constraints. LTBBWT offers three 80-minute interactive workshops each year on topics relevant to ward teaching. Topics have included bedside teaching, giving feedback, teaching learners at multiple levels, handling difficult learner encounters, teaching clinical reasoning, delivering chalk talks, and optimizing rounding structure. Over the first three years: - 2022: 15 attendees - 2023: 16 attendees - 2024: 9 attendees Attendees complete evaluations after each session and for the conference overall. Feedback has been strongly positive, with high Likert-scale ratings across years for: - connecting with other educator hospitalists, - relevance of content, - learning useful new information, - confidence in applying what was learned, - and willingness to recommend the conference. The evaluations also help presenters improve and shape future topics based on attendee suggestions. Overall, LTBBWT has proven to be a low-cost, scalable faculty development model that supports early-career and more experienced hospitalists alike. It helps build a community of clinician educators, improves teaching skills, and enhances participants’ academic growth and teaching portfolios.
