L.E.A.D. From Where You Are: An Academic Framework Multiyear Evaluation
Back to course
Pdf Summary
This abstract evaluates L.E.A.D. (Leadership, Embed, Academic Development), a framework created to improve advanced practice provider (APP) career satisfaction and increase involvement in academic and leadership activities. The framework was developed because APPs are often less involved in teaching, research, quality improvement, and leadership training, despite evidence linking career satisfaction with lower burnout.

In 2022, L.E.A.D. was incorporated into a hospital-level APP Professional Advancement Model taskforce at the University of Chicago. The framework encouraged participants to identify leadership opportunities, embed personal or professional interests into existing institutional structures, and build academic skills through mentorship and project execution.

Over two years, the taskforce re-engaged with the framework, including a presentation to refresh members on its steps and a renewed commitment to its use. Two members became active L.E.A.D. champions. The taskforce then focused on three goals: disseminating their work academically, engaging institutional stakeholders for support, and identifying a physician champion to strengthen mentorship between physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants.

Survey results from the second year showed strong positive outcomes. Among respondents, 88% strongly or very strongly agreed they were better able to recognize leadership opportunities, and 88% agreed they could more effectively embed career passions into existing committees or taskforces. Participants also reported greater confidence in academic skills, increased peer mentorship, and improved professional development. Outputs included internal quality posters, research day posters, and national conference posters.

Overall, the multiyear evaluation suggests that L.E.A.D. is a practical framework for helping APPs build leadership capacity, increase academic engagement, and find structured avenues for career growth and satisfaction.
