L.E.A.D From Where You Are: A Framework for Academic Success
Back to course
Pdf Summary
The document describes L.E.A.D (Leadership, Embed, Academic Development), a framework created to improve academic success, scholarly output, and professional satisfaction among hospital medicine advanced practice providers (APPs), including nurse practitioners and physician assistants. Background data show that APPs are widely used in hospital medicine, but are less often involved in teaching, research, quality improvement, and leadership. Because burnout contributes to turnover, the authors propose that structured professional development could improve retention and career satisfaction. The framework was first developed in 2019 within hospital medicine and led to increased educator participation and scholarly productivity. In 2021, it was expanded hospital-wide through the APP Hospitalist Manager role and a Professional Advancement Model (PAM) taskforce. The framework encourages participants to: - seek or create leadership roles, - embed their ideas into existing committees or projects, - intentionally develop academic skills through mentorship and aligned scholarly work. Results showed that the taskforce gained leadership visibility, including the AHM being elected chair of the APP executive council in 2023. The group transformed its work into a more formal academic process using tools like an A3 template and needs assessment, resulting in multiple presentations: one internal quality symposium poster, one internal research day poster, and three national conference posters. A survey after one year found strong support for continuing the framework: 11 of 13 participants responded (85%), and most agreed to continue L.E.A.D. The authors conclude that L.E.A.D helps expand academic development and peer mentorship across a hospital-level team, and that supporting APP scholarship may improve workforce satisfaction and help broaden the academic hospital medicine footprint.
