Korean Hospitalist Practice and Factors Influencing Job Satisfaction
Back to course
Pdf Summary
This study examined the current work patterns of Korean hospitalists and the factors linked to their job satisfaction, six years after the hospitalist pilot program began in Korea. The authors conducted an email survey from January 30 to February 18, 2023, sent to all 303 physicians with hospitalist roles in Korea. Seventy-nine physicians responded (26% response rate).

Respondents had a median age of 39 years, and about half were male internal medicine specialists with more than three years of hospitalist experience. Most were primarily focused on clinical care (94.4%), while interest in research and evidence-based medicine was much lower (21.5%). For more than two-thirds, non-clinical duties took up less than 20% of their time. Overall job satisfaction averaged 51.9%.

Using univariate and multivariate logistic regression, the study found that having a research mentor was significantly associated with higher job satisfaction. Other factors, such as more than three years of experience, a greater number of hospitalists at the facility, and greater autonomy, showed positive trends but were not statistically significant. Night shift work, work type, and total working hours were not associated with job satisfaction.

The findings suggest that Korean hospitalists remain largely clinically oriented, but research engagement is becoming more important. The study highlights mentorship—especially research mentorship—as a meaningful contributor to job satisfaction and points to the evolving role of hospitalists in Korea.
