Is Bedside Co-Rounding Worth the Effort? Evaluating the Impact of Bedside Co-Rounding on Patient Experience
Back to course
Pdf Summary
This study asked whether bedside co-rounding—when the hospitalist and nurse discuss the care plan together in the patient’s room—improves patient experience. The authors interviewed 30 general medicine inpatients at a large urban academic medical center using Likert-scale and open-ended questions.

Overall, patients reported very high satisfaction with communication and teamwork. Mean satisfaction was 4.8/5 for both hospitalist and nurse communication, and 89% rated teamwork as “very good.” Most patients said they did not actually observe their doctor and nurse interacting. Importantly, whether or not bedside co-rounding occurred did not significantly change ratings of satisfaction with communication or perceptions of teamwork.

The authors conclude that bedside co-rounding does not appear to improve patient experience in this setting, at least not by itself. They suggest it should not be adopted solely for the purpose of increasing patient satisfaction. However, it may still have other benefits not measured in this study, such as improving coordination or efficiency in certain clinical situations.

Future research should identify which patients or clinical contexts might benefit most from bedside co-rounding and explore whether secure messaging or other communication tools can strengthen inpatient team communication.
