Intentionally Building Identity Through Recruitmen ...
Intentionally Building Identity Through Recruitment Process as a Hospital Medicine Group
Back to course
Pdf Summary
This document describes an effort by a hospital medicine group at the University of Minnesota Medical Center to intentionally define and use its culture during recruitment. The authors note that recruiting a new hospitalist is expensive and that applicants increasingly value group culture, yet there is little guidance on how to incorporate culture into hiring.

The group’s goals were to give applicants clearer expectations, improve current members’ shared understanding of the division’s culture and goals, and create a system that can adapt as the group evolves.

Their process had four phases:
1. Identify key personnel involved in recruitment, including division leadership, administrative staff, faculty, and a DEI lead.
2. Map the current group footprint by reviewing roles, responsibilities, areas of interest, expertise, growth plans, and existing hiring practices.
3. Identify key values such as clinical excellence, collaboration and teamwork, challenging the status quo, and DEI/advocacy.
4. Integrate those values into recruitment by developing standardized HR-approved interview questions, using bidirectional interviews, and forming a trained recruitment committee of eight faculty members with a chair.

The conclusion emphasizes that recruitment is essential to the growth and success of a hospital medicine group. Building a clear group identity helps attract candidates who fit the culture and can thrive with existing faculty support. The authors argue that regularly identifying, codifying, and reassessing culture can improve recruitment, retention, work satisfaction, and long-term engagement.
