Innovative Didactic Week in the Hospitalist Track ...
Innovative Didactic Week in the Hospitalist Track for Internal Medicine Residents
Back to course
Pdf Summary
The Hospitalist Track at Cooper University Hospital was created to expose internal medicine residents to the non-clinical side of hospital medicine, including academic medicine, operations, quality and safety, informatics, and management. The track includes one didactic week, three junior hospitalist inpatient weeks, and four mandatory elective weeks (addiction medicine, palliative care, neurology, and medical education) for residents seeking distinction in the track. It is offered to PGY-2 and PGY-3 residents interested in hospital medicine as a career.

The didactic week, introduced in Fall 2022, is a novel educational model designed for small groups of 6–9 residents. The week includes 4–5 one-hour sessions per day, using varied formats such as lectures, Q&A sessions, chalk talks, and interactive activities. Topics include resume building, contract negotiation, financial planning, hospital operations, the roles of hospital staff, and quality/safety projects. Residents also participate in a Q&A panel with non-traditional hospitalists, such as per-diem, part-time, global health, and locum tenens physicians, to learn about different career paths within hospital medicine.

Feedback from residents has been overwhelmingly positive. They especially valued the informal style, interactive activities, and personal stories from presenters. Residents requested more content on finances, including investments, retirement plans, and student loans. Suggested future improvements include more multidisciplinary presentations, communication training for peer-to-peer calls, and greater exposure to post-acute care settings such as subacute rehab and long-term acute care hospitals.

Since the track began, 12 residents have graduated, 8 of whom became hospital medicine physicians. The program currently has 7 PGY-3 and 9 PGY-2 participants. The authors hope this didactic-week model can be adapted by other residency programs nationally.
