Innovating Family Patient Centered Rounding for Inpatient Acute Care Rounds
Back to course
Pdf Summary
This project describes an effort to bring family and patient-centered rounds (FPCR) into adult inpatient acute care, adapting a practice that is already common in pediatrics. FPCR involves including the patient and a support person in the rounding process to improve communication, understanding, and engagement in care.

The project’s purpose was to implement a structured FPCR process using a checklist. Key steps included informing patients about FPCR, documenting support person contact information on the whiteboard, introducing the patient and support person to the care team, inviting their input and questions during rounds, and surveying them before discharge about their experience. Rounds could occur in person or by phone to increase accessibility.

The project aimed to improve both patient and provider satisfaction as the primary outcome. Secondary goals included better communication, stronger adherence to care plans, increased awareness of social determinants of health, and more high-value, patient-centered care.

Overall, the initiative presents FPCR as a novel approach in adult medicine with potential benefits for inpatient care. The authors conclude that although implementation requires an initial time investment, the approach is worthwhile because it can improve patient satisfaction and the overall value of care.
