Increasing Mychart Enrollment and Utilization for Hospitalized Patients
Back to course
Pdf Summary
This project aimed to increase MyChart enrollment and use among hospitalized patients through a multidisciplinary inpatient workflow. Patients received activation codes at admission, enrollment information in welcome packets, and support from nursing, ancillary staff, and physicians to encourage use of the patient portal during their stay. The initiative also included a hospital-wide education campaign to improve awareness and engagement.

The goal was not only to increase portal activation but also to assess whether greater use of MyChart could improve patient engagement, satisfaction, and transition-of-care outcomes such as length of stay, readmissions, and follow-up appointment attendance.

Early results showed that 51.2% of enrolled patients activated MyChart, and 58.6% of those who activated it used it during hospitalization. Activation rates varied by demographic group: White patients activated MyChart more often than Black patients (75.9% vs 43.9%, p=0.01), female patients more often than male patients (52.9% vs 47.1%, p=0.01), and younger patients more often than older patients (63.1% for age <50 vs 47.6% for ages 50–75 vs 44.2% for age >75, p=0.01).

The findings suggest that inpatient use of digital tools like MyChart may help improve patient outcomes, health literacy, and communication, but the data also highlight important equity gaps. Since Black patients at this urban academic center were less likely to activate MyChart despite representing a large share of the patient population, the authors conclude that future interventions should place greater emphasis on health equity and tailored digital engagement strategies.
