This study evaluated a one-hour workshop designed to improve pediatric residents’ discharge planning skills and their ability to create a discharge bundle that includes social determinants of health (SDoH). Forty PGY1–PGY2 residents participated during inpatient community pediatrics and nursery rotations.<br /><br />Residents completed pre- and post-workshop surveys rating their self-efficacy in discharge planning and their attitudes toward the workshop. They also created discharge bundles for a case patient. Bundle completeness was scored independently against a reference bundle. After the initial discharge bundle was submitted, residents completed an SDoH screen and then revised the bundle.<br /><br />Results showed that residents’ baseline confidence in discharge planning was low, but self-efficacy improved significantly after the workshop. Discharge bundle completeness also improved after incorporating the SDoH screen. All participants reported that the workshop improved their understanding of discharge planning and that they would apply the framework in future discharges.<br /><br />The main conclusion was that a brief interactive workshop can increase pediatric residents’ confidence in discharge planning and improve the quality of discharge bundles, especially when SDoH screening is included. The authors noted that the next step is to evaluate whether this educational intervention improves actual patient outcomes.
