Implementation of an Orientation Bootcamp for the Medicine and Pediatrics Sub-Internships
Back to course
Pdf Summary
This project implemented a half-day orientation bootcamp for medicine and pediatrics sub-interns to better prepare them for residency-level clinical responsibilities. The motivation was that although medical school graduates are expected to have certain practical skills, many internship tasks are not formally taught in traditional curricula, and the prior sub-intern orientation was only a brief 30-minute session focused mainly on logistics.

The bootcamp was developed after identifying key skills needed for success on sub-internship, including use of the electronic medical record, task prioritization, paging, handoff, calling consults, and responding to microaggressions. Students completed surveys before and after the bootcamp to assess their perceived preparedness and comfort in these domains. The results were compared with retrospective survey data from students who had received the traditional brief orientation in 2020.

Overall, students who participated in the bootcamp reported feeling more prepared for sub-internship than those who attended the shorter orientation, with 79% vs. 59% describing themselves as extremely or very well prepared. Immediate pre/post surveys also showed increased comfort and preparedness across several important skills, such as communicating with nurses and case managers, calling consultants, being the first point of contact for patients, safely handing off care, using the EMR to admit patients, discharging patients, prioritizing tasks, managing time, and recognizing when a patient was acutely ill and needed help.

The authors concluded that the bootcamp improved students’ self-perceived readiness for the sub-internship. Limitations included reliance on retrospective comparison data and self-reported preparedness rather than direct assessment of specific skills. Future directions include adding training on delivering bad news and asking for help, as well as evaluating effects on grades, evaluations, and student feedback.
