Implementation of a Pulmonary Embolism Response Team: Initial Outcomes at a Large Academic Hospital
Back to course
Pdf Summary
This study evaluated whether creating a multidisciplinary Pulmonary Embolism Response Team (PERT) improved outcomes for patients with acute pulmonary embolism at a large academic hospital. PERT was launched in October 2023 and included specialists from pulmonary hypertension, critical care, interventional radiology, and cardiovascular/thoracic surgery. The team also implemented hospital-wide education and a protocol to risk-stratify PE patients at diagnosis.

Researchers performed a retrospective chart review of all patients with acute PE during the year before PERT implementation and the year after. They compared patient characteristics, anticoagulant use, mortality, and length of stay.

After PERT was introduced, treatment patterns shifted: enoxaparin use increased and heparin use decreased, reflecting the team’s recommendation to use enoxaparin when appropriate because of its more stable profile. Clinical outcomes also improved, with both mortality and floor length of stay decreasing after implementation.

The authors conclude that the combination of PERT, provider education, and increased specialized care likely contributed to better outcomes for PE patients. However, they note that interpretation of the mortality findings is limited because the pre-PERT group included more ICU admissions and higher-risk patients. Further research is needed to determine whether the lower mortality trend persists over time.
