Implementation of a Nurse Navigator and Growth of a Bedside Procedure Service
Back to course
Pdf Summary
This study evaluated whether adding a dedicated bedside nurse navigator improved the efficiency and morale of a hospital-based bedside procedure service (BPS). The service performed common inpatient procedures such as central venous access, dialysis catheter placement, paracentesis, thoracentesis, arthrocentesis, and lumbar puncture.

The problem was that bedside procedures often require nursing support for consent, medications, time-outs, and lab coordination. As procedure volume increases, bedside nurses are pulled away from their regular patient care duties, which can delay procedures and discharge.

Researchers compared a pre-intervention period (1/1/2024–5/30/2024) with an intervention period (6/18/2024–1/7/2025), during which a dedicated RN was assigned to assist the procedure team. The BPS was staffed by one attending physician. The nurse was present on 81% of intervention days.

Results showed improved operational performance after the RN navigator was introduced:
- Average rollovers decreased from 4.0 to 2.8 per day
- Average new consults stayed similar (9.2 vs 9.0 per day)
- Average completed consults increased from 8.3 to 8.8 per day
- Procedure completion rate improved from 91% to 98%

Provider morale also improved, with survey responses suggesting less stress, better quality of life, and stronger intent to continue working on the service.

The authors concluded that a dedicated bedside RN significantly improved BPS efficiency, productivity, and provider satisfaction without compromising patient safety. They also suggested that faster procedure completion may reduce hospital length of stay and create substantial cost savings.
