Impact of a Facilitated Peer Mentoring Program and Dedicated Curriculum

Pdf Summary
This program evaluation assessed a facilitated peer mentoring model with a dedicated curriculum for junior academic hospitalists, addressing the shortage of traditional senior mentor-mentee pairs in hospital medicine. The program recruited junior faculty and senior facilitators, organized participants into five small interest-based groups, and combined alternating large-group curriculum sessions with small-group mentoring. The goals were to achieve at least 50% participation, improve knowledge of key academic promotion topics, and assess satisfaction and perceived career benefit.

Results showed the program was feasible and well received. Average participation in large-group sessions was 57.4%, exceeding the 50% target. Small-group participation was more variable and harder to sustain. Survey data from 19 participants showed improved knowledge in several areas, including CV development, promotion pathways, educational portfolios, patient care portfolios, and manuscript writing. Statistically significant gains were seen in understanding educational portfolios, promotion pathways, patient care portfolios, identifying activities that count toward portfolios, and knowing article types they could write.

Participants reported high satisfaction: 84% were satisfied with the program, 79% believed it would help them achieve career goals, and 95% would recommend it to colleagues. The authors conclude that facilitated peer mentoring is a low-cost, replicable strategy to support career development in academic hospital medicine, especially when mentorship resources are limited. Incorporating a structured curriculum appears to help meet the needs of busy hospitalists. Limitations included inconsistent small-group attendance and the lack of long-term data on scholarly productivity or academic promotion.
