Pdf Summary
This retrospective cohort study examined whether ambient temperature affects hospital outcomes for patients admitted with acute severe asthma, comparing the U.S. Northeast and South from 2016 to 2019. Using the National Inpatient Sample and monthly temperature data from the National Centers for Environmental Information, the authors analyzed regional admission patterns and tested associations between average monthly temperature and monthly asthma admissions.

A total of 5,485 admissions were identified: 2,050 in the Northeast and 3,435 in the South. Admissions in both regions were lower during warmer months (May through August) and higher during colder months. Patient age, sex distribution, and comorbidity burden were similar across regions.

The study found important regional differences in outcomes. Patients admitted in the Northeast had higher hospital charges and were less likely to be discharged home, particularly during colder periods. However, there were no significant differences between regions in hospital mortality or length of stay.

The authors conclude that ambient temperature may influence outcomes for patients with severe asthma, with colder weather potentially worsening healthcare utilization and discharge outcomes. They recommend that healthcare systems remain especially vigilant in managing severe asthma during colder months. Further research is needed to better understand why outcomes differ between the Northeast and South and to clarify the role of environmental temperature.

A key limitation is that the data were aggregated by region and month, so conclusions cannot be made about individual patients.
