Pdf Summary
This retrospective pilot study examined the impact of the Consult for Addiction Treatment and Care in Hospitals (CATCH) team on medication for addiction treatment (MAT) outcomes among hospitalized patients with opioid use disorder (OUD) at Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center in the South Bronx. The South Bronx has a very high overdose death rate, with fentanyl involved in most cases, making effective inpatient addiction treatment especially important.

The study reviewed 148 adult hospitalizations for OUD between June and August 2023, excluding patients who died during hospitalization. Of these, 70 patients (47%) accepted a CATCH consult, and 38 (25%) consented to MAT. Among those who started MAT, 16 patients (42%) completed treatment and 22 (57%) did not. Most MAT participants followed the Suboxone pathway (89%), while a smaller number chose Belbuca (10%).

Researchers compared emergency department (ED) and inpatient visits in the six months after hospitalization between patients who completed MAT and those who did not. Completion of MAT was associated with fewer ED visits related to OUD (0.1 vs. 1.5; P=0.02), suggesting a significant benefit. Inpatient visits related to OUD were also lower among MAT completers, but this difference was not statistically significant. For all-cause ED and inpatient visits, no significant differences were found between groups.

Overall, the study suggests that CATCH and MAT may help reduce future ED use among hospitalized patients with OUD. However, follow-up and MAT completion rates remained low. The authors recommend increasing resources for the CATCH team and involving Community Health Workers and counselors to improve engagement, follow-up, and community health outcomes.
