How to Be a Star! An Oral Presentation Curriculum for Internal Medicine Clerkship Students
Back to course
Pdf Summary
The STAR curriculum was created to improve oral case presentations for internal medicine clerkship students, after faculty and students described current presentations as inefficient, repetitive, and lacking clear expectations. The curriculum aimed to make presentations more structured, timed, reasoning-focused, and clinically relevant.

STAR was implemented as a three-part intervention: a pre-clerkship component, a workshop during clerkship week 2, and a check-in during week 4. Supporting materials were placed in an online folder for both faculty and students, including presentation guidelines and templates. The student workshop included instruction on the STAR framework, peer practice, and feedback using a rubric.

Program evaluation used pre- and post-STAR surveys of faculty and students, along with Wilcoxon rank sum and Fisher exact tests. Pre-STAR surveys were completed by 32 faculty and 13 students; post-STAR surveys by 40 faculty and 24 students.

Results suggested the curriculum was well received. Most faculty and students agreed STAR was useful for teaching and learning presentation skills. Faculty reported that student presentations improved, expectations became clearer, and presentation length became more appropriate. Students also reported receiving more frequent feedback and found the resources and workshop helpful. However, students still perceived inconsistency in attending expectations both before and after the intervention.

Overall, the STAR curriculum was successfully designed and implemented, and it appears to have improved presentation quality and faculty/student satisfaction. The main remaining challenge is improving faculty education to ensure more consistent expectations across attendings.
