How Many Future Lives Will You Save? Gamification Is an Effective Tool for Patient Safety and Quality Education
Back to course
Pdf Summary
The document describes Safety Quest (SQ), a gamified quality improvement (QI) and patient safety education course developed to address gaps in trainee knowledge and engagement. The authors note that medical errors remain a major cause of death in the U.S., and although the ACGME requires QI and patient safety training, many learners still have limited understanding of core principles. SQ was designed using the ACGME Clinical Learning Environment Review framework and offered to undergraduate medical education (UME), graduate medical education (GME), and continuing medical education (CME) learners. Outcomes included learner satisfaction, attitudes, and knowledge. Trainee feedback was analyzed thematically, while CME pre- and post-test scores were compared statistically. Results showed strong participation: in 2018, 1,364 GME and 65 UME learners completed a level of SQ, and 374 CME learners participated in 2019–2020. Among CME learners, post-test performance improved markedly, with 98% passing after SQ versus 59% before (p < 0.0001). Most learners reported positive experiences, with 92–93% agreeing that SQ contributed to professional growth, was engaging and interactive, and improved knowledge. Among trainees, SQ was preferred over other independent learning methods such as videos, online modules, PowerPoints, and articles. Feedback was largely favorable, especially regarding engagement. Overall, the authors conclude that gamification is an effective way to teach patient safety and QI, increasing engagement, improving knowledge, and allowing flexible, widely disseminated virtual learning.
