Hospitalist-Led Mock Code Collaborative Project for Residents at Community-Based Program
Back to course
Pdf Summary
This project describes HMC CPR, a hospitalist-led, longitudinal mock code curriculum created for new Internal Medicine and Family Medicine residency programs at a community hospital. The program was designed in response to a clear need: residents required better preparation for code blue and rapid response events, while the hospital had limited resources and a newly established multidisciplinary training environment. The curriculum uses simulation-based education to provide a safe setting for deliberate practice and repeated learning over time. Hospitalists led the project because they are often primary responders to code blue and rapid response team calls and are well positioned to teach inpatient emergency care, leadership, and team collaboration. The curriculum goals were for residents to: 1. Develop an organized approach to leading code blue and rapid response situations. 2. Build confidence in responding to these emergencies. 3. Improve collaboration with nurses, technicians, and other healthcare professionals. The program included quarterly didactics covering ACLS principles, stroke response, common rapid response scenarios, and massive transfusion protocol, followed by simulation sessions and in-hospital mock code/rapid response scenarios with multidisciplinary participation. Topics included initial code organization, chest compression quality, defibrillator use, and debriefing. An “I(CA)RAMBO” mnemonic was also incorporated to reinforce cardiac arrest guideline adherence. The authors conclude that hospitalists play a pivotal role in developing innovative educational curricula in community-based training settings. The project demonstrates a scalable model for improving resident preparedness, confidence, and teamwork in managing critical inpatient emergencies. Evaluation surveys are used to assess curriculum quality and outcomes.
