Pdf Summary
A survey of 44 hospitalist advanced practice providers (APPs) at Froedtert Hospital and the Medical College of Wisconsin assessed perceptions of scholarly work, barriers, and helpful supports. The anonymous Qualtrics survey was completed by 27 respondents (61%) between June 2 and 14, 2022. Scholarly work was defined as writing or mentoring learners in case reports, research, or quality improvement projects.

Most respondents had been at MCW for 3 years (63%), and only 11% had 10 years of institutional experience. Although interest in scholarship was high, only 30% had any prior scholarly experience and just 19% had completed at least one project.

Respondents saw clear benefits of scholarship. The most commonly reported were increased medical knowledge (93%), improved critical thinking (78%), CV development (82%), and opportunities to build scientific writing/publication skills and network with peers or other institutions (both 67%). Few respondents (15%) felt lack of interest or motivation was a barrier.

The main barriers were lack of incentives (86%), lack of time because of clinical and administrative duties (78%), and lack of knowledge about available opportunities (78%). To promote participation, APPs favored protected time (93%), financial or recognition-based incentives (93%), a structured peer mentorship program (81%), and training or workshops (78%).

Overall, the study suggests that APPs value scholarship and see it as beneficial for career development, but need better support. The authors conclude that protected time, incentives, and structured mentorship could increase APP involvement in scholarly projects and help guide career development efforts.
