Although 20% had a prior osteoporosis diagnosis in the electronic medical record, only 2% had documented prior treatment.<br /><br />Discharge planning was also limited. No patients were referred for bone density testing or outpatient follow-up to consider osteoporosis medications such as bisphosphonates or teriparatide. The conclusion was that there are significant opportunities to improve both inpatient and transitional care for patients with vertebral compression fractures, especially by better recognizing and treating underlying osteoporosis.
