Hospital Medicine Faculty Boot Camp
Hospital Medicine Faculty Boot Camp
Back to course
Pdf Summary
This poster describes a structured onboarding “boot camp” for new Hospital Medicine faculty designed to ease the transition from residency, build community, and potentially reduce burnout and attrition. The authors note that little data exist on this transition, despite its steep learning curve.

The boot camp consisted of 11 fifty-minute, in-person sessions delivered over three afternoons in September with protected time so participants were not on service. Experienced faculty led sessions covering division- and hospital-specific logistics, local quality improvement initiatives, clinician-educator skills, and professional development resources.

The program was evaluated using surveys completed before and after the boot camp. The retrospective pre-post analysis assessed changes in confidence and knowledge; burnout and attrition were identified as important future outcomes to measure.

Results showed that 15 of 17 participants completed both surveys. Most were young faculty members aged 25–35; nearly half identified as female, most were transitioning directly from residency, and several were international medical graduates. The poster reports favorable short-term improvements in participant confidence and knowledge after the boot camp.

The authors conclude that faculty boot camps can positively affect early outcomes and may foster collegiality and a sense of belonging, even if those effects are harder to measure directly. They plan to refine the program further, study longer-term outcomes, and explore whether such onboarding efforts provide a financial return for hospital divisions.
