Group Concept Mapping for Pediatric Hospital Medicine Fellow Professional Development
Back to course
Pdf Summary
This study used group concept mapping to develop a framework for a pediatric hospital medicine fellowship professional development curriculum. The motivation was that graduating fellows often feel underprepared for the non-clinical responsibilities of academic faculty roles, suggesting a need for more structured preparation during fellowship.

A multidisciplinary group of 18 participants, including academic hospitalists, hybrid and community hospitalists, a nurse practitioner, and a fellow, answered the prompt: “What topics should be included in a pediatric hospital medicine fellowship professional development curriculum?” Using a 60-minute brainstorming session followed by statement consolidation, sorting, and rating, the team generated 359 ideas that were refined into 73 final statements. Participants then rated each topic for importance and feasibility on a 1–5 scale, and the data were analyzed using the R package RCMap.

The results produced a cluster map and a go-zone plot highlighting priorities for curriculum development. Key competencies identified included providing culturally competent care, leading a team, and delivering effective feedback. The process also surfaced competencies that are not commonly addressed in existing fellowship curriculum recommendations.

The authors conclude that mixed-methods group concept mapping can help define a practical and comprehensive professional development framework for pediatric hospital medicine fellows. They suggest that these findings can inform future updates to fellowship guidelines and support the creation of a curriculum aimed at improving preparedness for faculty careers. Future work will focus on building and evaluating the curriculum to determine whether it improves fellow readiness for academic practice.
