Going for Gold: Implementation and Evaluation of a Pocus Olympics Faculty Development Session
Back to course
Pdf Summary
This faculty development project introduced a “POCUS Olympics” to improve hospitalists’ point-of-care ultrasound skills through gamified team-based learning. The need arose because many hospitalists lack consistent POCUS training and do not achieve competency during residency, limiting clinical use.

Hospitalists from one of four NYU-affiliated hospitals participated in three competitive events: Cardiac Charades, Dyspnea Darts, and Blind Taboo. Participants completed pre- and post-training surveys using a 5-point Likert scale, and results were analyzed with two-tailed t-tests.

Among 15 participants, 86.7% completed the pre-survey and 60% completed the post-survey. Most were novice users: 62% identified as beginners, 77% had taken a prior POCUS course, and only 8% used POCUS routinely. After the session, participants reported significantly greater comfort obtaining basic ultrasound views (mean 2.44 to 3.22, p=0.03) and improved familiarity with the BLUE protocol for evaluating dyspnea (mean 1.89 to 3.44, p=0.008). There were no significant improvements in comfort performing cardiac measurements or describing technical adjustments to optimize image acquisition.

The curriculum was well received, with mean ratings between 4.2 and 4.7 out of 5 for educational value, teamwork, and entertainment.

The authors conclude that the POCUS Olympics improved self-reported ability to obtain basic views and use the BLUE protocol. However, the lack of improvement in some objectives may reflect misalignment between activities and learning goals. Limitations include reliance on self-reported outcomes, a small single-institution sample, and limited generalizability.
