From Bed to Better: Driving Inpatient Mobility With Digital Engagement

Pdf Summary
This descriptive analysis evaluated a digital inpatient mobility program using the Get Well Network (GWN) platform at a quaternary academic medical center. The intervention delivered two daily television prompts: one reminding patients about the importance of mobility and a second asking whether they completed the recommended activity. Prompts were tailored to each patient’s mobility level using daily nursing AM-PAC scores aligned with the Johns Hopkins Highest Level of Mobility (JH-HLM) scale.

The program was first piloted on two adult units and then expanded hospital-wide. During the one-month pilot, 69.7% of 317 patients engaged with the platform, generating 479 total interactions. Of these interactions, 72.9% were associated with patients reporting that they completed a mobility activity. Unit-level engagement was also strong, with 72% of patients on unit 10E and 66% on unit 10W engaging with at least one prompt.

After hospital-wide implementation, early data showed engagement rates of 67% in the JH-HLM 2–5 group and 70% in the JH-HLM 6–8 group. Among patients who participated, more than 80% reported achieving their movement goal, including 81% in the non-ambulatory group and 80.9% in the ambulatory group.

Although the study did not directly measure changes in actual mobility outcomes, the findings suggest that digitally delivered, individualized prompts can achieve high patient engagement and may be a promising strategy to support inpatient mobility. Future work will examine concordance between patient-reported and nurse-documented mobility and compare outcomes among patients who do and do not engage with the platform.
