Pdf Summary
This cross-sectional study examined the frequency of raised mean platelet volume (MPV) in adults aged 45 and older with confirmed stroke at a tertiary care center. MPV is described as an inflammatory marker linked to larger platelet size, increased platelet activation, and a higher risk of cardiovascular events. The study aimed to assess MPV levels in ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke patients and highlight its clinical significance.

A total of 340 patients were included. Most were male (71%, n=242), while 29% (n=98) were female. Regarding comorbidities, 12.3% (n=42) had type 2 diabetes mellitus, 16.7% (n=57) had hypertension, and 70% (n=241) had both diabetes and hypertension. Among stroke types, 44% (n=150) had ischemic stroke and 56% (n=190) had hemorrhagic stroke.

The mean MPV was 11.9 ± 1.52 fL in ischemic stroke patients and 12.5 ± 0.97 fL in hemorrhagic stroke patients, indicating elevated MPV in both groups, with slightly higher values in hemorrhagic stroke. The study concludes that MPV is an important marker of inflammation and is increased in both ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke. Patients with stroke risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, and smoking who also have raised MPV should be monitored closely because of their increased risk of cardiovascular complications.
