Focused, Skill-Based Simulation Training in Status Epilepticus and Supraventricular Tachycardia Improves Pediatric Residents' Confidence and Performance

This study evaluated whether focused, skill-based simulation training could improve pediatric residents’ confidence and performance in managing two high-acuity emergencies: status epilepticus (SE) and supraventricular tachycardia (SVT). The authors noted that general pediatrics residents often encounter these emergencies but may lack confidence because they have limited hands-on experience. While simulation is useful, broad scenarios may not allow enough targeted practice.<br /><br />The study used a pretest-posttest design over three weeks. Residents were randomly assigned to either an SE or SVT simulation scenario. In week 1, they completed an initial simulation. In week 2, they received targeted teaching on key management principles. In week 3, they repeated the simulation. Performance was measured after each session using standardized checklists, and residents also completed self-assessments of confidence. Statistical analysis used the chi-square test.<br /><br />The results showed that focused training improved both confidence and performance in managing these emergencies. Residents performed better after the targeted teaching session and reported greater self-assurance in their ability to respond to SE and SVT cases.<br /><br />The authors concluded that skill-based simulation is an effective approach for pediatric emergency preparedness. However, the study was limited by a small sample size, a single-department participant pool, and scheduling constraints. The authors recommend larger, multi-center studies to confirm these findings and to examine the long-term impact of focused simulation training on resident readiness.
