Pdf Summary
The Family Medicine Education Quality Improvement Project (FAME-QI) was created to address a lack of tracking for teaching on the Family Medicine Inpatient Service, which is staffed by internists and family medicine hospitalists along with senior residents and interns. The goal was to develop a simple, coordinated process for monitoring what topics were taught during the month-long rotation and to better understand what interns perceived they had learned.

The project used a whiteboard listing 52 High Value Topics (HVTs) from the family medicine core curriculum. Interns placed magnets next to the topics they believed had been covered during the month. Data were collected monthly over a two-year period (2022–2024), with baseline data from 2022 and interim results from the first quarter of 2023. Attendings were also encouraged during monthly staff meetings to ensure HVTs were covered.

Results showed statistically significant improvement in both HVT coverage and overall curriculum coverage. Topic coverage varied widely at baseline, from 0% for quality measures to 68.1% for hypo/hypernatremia, but improved in 2023, with hypo/hypernatremia rising to 92.3%. Overall curriculum coverage increased from 28.76% in 2022 to 59.46% in 2023. Survey feedback indicated the project did not add burden to interns’ daily activities.

The authors concluded that this unobtrusive, cost-neutral, and easily reproducible process helped improve curriculum coverage and made it easier for attendings to track teaching. Future plans include correlating topic coverage with in-training examination scores and using the data to guide individualized intern learning plans.
