Faculty Development Program for Academic Hospitalists
Back to course
Pdf Summary
This faculty development program was created for 80 adult and pediatric academic hospitalists using Kern’s 6-step curriculum design. First, two hospitalists conducted a needs assessment across hospitalist faculty and educational leaders. The 24-item survey examined demographics, teaching needs, career development needs, barriers to teaching, and learning preferences. Sixty-five percent of faculty (52/80) responded.

Based on survey results, the team designed eight monthly one-hour workshops delivered over six months. The sessions covered effective feedback, mini-lectures, bedside rounding, team/time management, recommendation letters, promotion, academic medicine basics, and quality improvement. Each workshop included a short lecture, demonstration, and opportunities for practice, role play, and discussion. For example, faculty practiced giving feedback using scripts and delivering mini-lectures with peer and facilitator feedback. Two later sessions were canceled because of COVID-19-related clinical deployment needs.

The program was evaluated using a single-group pre/post survey. Fifty-one hospitalists completed the baseline survey, and 14 completed post-workshop surveys. Before the intervention, many respondents reported gaps in key areas: up to 35% felt inadequately prepared to teach effectively at the bedside, 33% lacked a 5-year career development plan, and 43% did not know the steps needed for promotion.

Forty hospitalists attended at least one workshop. Among post-survey respondents, 93% agreed that their teaching skills improved. All nine assessed domains showed improvement, though the study was underpowered to test statistical significance due to the low post-survey response rate.

Overall, the workshop series was well received and showed promise as a faculty development model for hospitalists. The authors plan to repeat it annually as part of onboarding for new faculty.
