Everyone Loves Field Trips: A Passport to Time-Efficient Medical Education Through Task-Based Learning
Back to course
Pdf Summary
The document describes a new medical education approach called the Field Trip-Passport (FTP) method, designed to balance patient care with efficient student teaching in clinical settings. It is based on Task-Based Learning (TBL), where learning is organized around real clinical tasks rather than traditional lectures.

In FTP, the educator creates a task list using cases from the day’s patient list. Students receive this list as a blank checklist called a “Passport.” Working in teams, they go on “Field Trips” to complete the tasks, which may include physical exams, patient communication, reviewing medications, examining lab data, consulting other team members, and solving clinical reasoning problems. Students document what they learn on the Passport, similar to collecting stamps during travel.

The next morning, students present their completed Passports to the educator in a review session. They reflect on their learning and receive feedback. The cycle can then repeat with new tasks as often as desired.

The method was developed on a Direct Care Hospital Teaching Service that has students but no interns or residents. Its goal is to provide structured, relevant, and engaging learning while allowing clinicians to continue their duties. The authors argue that FTP encourages teamwork, increases patient interaction, supports intrinsic motivation, and helps educators supervise teaching without disrupting clinical workflow.

Overall, FTP is presented as a flexible, time-efficient, and practical teaching model with promise for both inpatient and outpatient medical education.
