Evaluating Cross-Cover Comfort After Dedicated Night Float Experience
Back to course
Pdf Summary
This document summarizes a medical education study on whether a dedicated night float/cross-cover experience improves student confidence.

Because new resident duty-hour rules have increased handoffs and cross-cover responsibilities, the authors created a direct-care hospitalist service sub-internship with one week of supervised night float exposure. During this rotation, students handled cross-cover and overnight admissions, with the goal of preparing them for intern-year night coverage and emergencies.

Nine students completed the experience, working five night shifts each. They rated their comfort with cross-cover tasks before and after the rotation using a Likert-style survey. Results showed statistically significant improvement in several areas, including:
- making clinical decisions for cross-cover patients
- responding to inpatient emergencies
- developing and communicating overnight care plans to nursing
- triaging whether bedside assessment was needed

The conclusion was that supervised clinical night float training made students significantly more comfortable with all major aspects of night cross-cover. The authors argue that hospitalist-run direct care services are a strong educational setting for this kind of training and suggest adding rapid response simulations in the future.

The page also lists related literature on duty-hour limits, night float systems, resident on-call experiences, and inpatient teaching services, reinforcing the broader educational context of the study.
