Pdf Summary
This study evaluated whether an Escape Room could be an effective educational tool for teaching patient safety to medical students, compared with a standard printed module. The goals were to assess feasibility and to measure changes in students’ self-reported confidence and knowledge in identifying and speaking up about patient safety hazards.

Twenty-two participants were randomly assigned to either the Escape Room group (n=13) or the printout module group (n=9). Both groups covered the same themes: patient identification, patient advocacy, and physical harm. The Escape Room group also received a debriefing afterward. Students completed pretests, posttests, a simulation assessment, and follow-up surveys at 3 and 6 months.

Results showed that both educational methods improved confidence in speaking up about patient safety concerns. In the simulation assessment, both groups earned most of the available 12 points, suggesting that participants understood the material well regardless of format. Survey results showed a statistically significant increase in students who strongly agreed they would speak up about errors, along with a decrease in disagreement (p=0.04). Feedback from Escape Room participants was very positive, with comments such as “so much fun,” “very interactive,” and “fun way to learn about patient safety.”

Overall, the study suggests that an Escape Room is a promising and engaging teaching method for patient safety. It appears feasible for medical education and may be expanded to other topics and trainee groups. Both the Escape Room and printout module improved students’ confidence, supporting the value of interactive learning in promoting safer patient care.
