This project addressed barriers to informed consent for paracentesis among patients with limited English proficiency and low health literacy, who often struggle to understand procedural risks, benefits, and key details even with interpreter support. To improve comprehension, the team created a one-page, pictogram-based infographic using plain-language English, with Spanish and Chinese translations developed in collaboration with professional medical interpreters.<br /><br />The infographic summarized the main steps, risks, and benefits of paracentesis in a simplified visual format. It was piloted with input from physicians, patients, caregivers, and Patient-Family Advisory Council (PFAC) members through anonymous email and in-person surveys. Feedback from these groups supported the use of a concise, pictogram-based guide as a helpful tool during the consent process.<br /><br />Future plans include improving the visual design with the hospital graphics team, developing a frequently asked questions document focused on after-care instructions, and expanding this model to other common bedside procedures. Overall, the project aims to promote more equitable informed consent through accessible, visually supported communication.
