Pdf Summary
This retrospective study used 2015–2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data to examine the prevalence and epidemiology of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in the U.S., as well as its association with hypertension (HTN) and cardiovascular disease (CVD). NAFLD was defined as at least 5% hepatic steatosis in the absence of other liver diseases or major alcohol use.

Among 275,968 participants, 717 (0.26%) met criteria for NAFLD. NAFLD was more common in older adults (median age 62 years), males, Mexican Americans, other Hispanic groups, and individuals with a median household income of $100,000. People with NAFLD had earlier onset of CVD compared with those without NAFLD (47 vs. 60 years), and higher prevalence of CVD (15.90% vs. 4.64%) and HTN (85.98% vs. 80.39%).

Regression analysis showed that NAFLD was strongly associated with CVDs, with a prevalence odds ratio of 9.78, and was also associated with HTN (prevalence odds 1.20). The study concludes that NAFLD is linked to an increased burden of cardiovascular comorbidities and earlier disease onset. Early identification and risk stratification may help reduce CVD burden in people with NAFLD.
