This retrospective cross-sectional study examined the burden, complications, and outcomes of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) among adult hospitalizations in the U.S. using the Nationwide Inpatient Sample from 2016 to 2018. The analysis identified DVT cases through ICD-10 codes and assessed prevalence trends, demographics, and clinical outcomes using chi-square tests, t-tests, and multivariable logistic regression.<br /><br />Among 87,761,798 total hospitalizations, 1,174,625 patients (1.34%) had DVT. The prevalence increased slightly but significantly over time, from 1.32% in January 2016 to 1.36% in December 2018. DVT hospitalizations were associated with greater resource use, including a mean hospital cost of $95,728 and an average length of stay of 8.13 days.<br /><br />Compared with non-DVT hospitalizations, DVT patients had worse outcomes in univariate analysis, including higher inpatient mortality (4.76% vs. 2.18%), greater disability (70.09% vs. 36.07%), more frequent discharge to non-home facilities (53.58% vs. 33.74%), and a higher risk of death on discharge (55.32% vs. 27.23%), all statistically significant.<br /><br />After adjustment, DVT remained associated with increased inpatient mortality (aOR 1.04, 95% CI 1.02–1.06) and disability (aOR 2.4, 95% CI 2.38–2.42). The authors conclude that DVT is associated with substantial clinical and economic burden, and that improved management protocols and patient education may help reduce its impact. Further research is recommended.
