Back to course
Pdf Summary
This study examined perceived facilitators and barriers to research productivity among Pediatric Hospital Medicine (PHM) faculty at a large tertiary children’s hospital, in the context of increasing expectations for scholarship after PHM board certification.

A survey was distributed to 68 eligible PHM faculty members at Children’s National Hospital. The questionnaire assessed mentorship, networking, resource use, training, and support. Responses were collected over 14 weeks and analyzed using descriptive statistics.

Key facilitators of research productivity included:
- Mentorship
- A Health Service Research training program
- Protected non-clinical time
- Networking opportunities

Key barriers included:
- Limited time
- Fragmented time
- Burnout
- Limited statistical support

The findings suggest several actionable ways to improve research productivity in academic PHM divisions, such as creating a research consult service, supporting facilitated Health Service Research projects, and intentionally matching mentors with mentees. Overall, the study highlights that both individual support and structural resources are important for strengthening research output in pediatric hospital medicine.
