Enhancing Rapid Response Management Skills and Confidence Among Family Medicine Residents at Lsu Shreveport/Monroe
Back to course
Pdf Summary
This project addressed a training gap in rapid response (RR) management among Family Medicine residents at LSU Monroe. Residents reported stress and difficulty making decisions when called to manage hospitalized patients with acute deterioration, likely due to limited structured education and relatively infrequent direct exposure to RRs.

The team aimed to improve residents’ RR management skills and confidence by at least 50% over three months using classroom teaching and simulation. The intervention included 14 topics commonly encountered in rapid responses, such as altered mental status, seizures, chest pain, dyspnea, arrhythmias, DKA/hypoglycemia, anaphylaxis, hypotension/shock, and others. A quasi-experimental design was used, with pre- and post-intervention surveys and quizzes assessing perceived confidence, knowledge, and skills.

Before the intervention, 18 residents completed the survey. Their average confidence score was 2.77/5 (55.4%), with lower confidence among junior residents. Pre-session quiz scores varied across sessions, averaging 56%, 50%, 75%, and 42.2%. All residents felt the sessions would be highly useful. After the intervention, 14 residents completed the follow-up. Average self-confidence increased to 4.3/5 and perceived knowledge to 4.4/5, reflecting a 55% rise in confidence. Average quiz scores improved to 82.6%, a 48% increase in knowledge and skills.

Residents strongly recommended integrating RR education into the regular didactic curriculum and adding more hands-on simulation. The project concluded that structured RR education significantly improved resident confidence and competence, helping prepare them for hospital medicine and potentially improving patient care. The authors plan to sustain gains by scheduling RR training throughout the academic year.
