Pdf Summary
This cross-sectional study examined whether eHealth literacy (eHL) is linked to willingness to use digital self-management tools and confidence in managing COPD or asthma among adult inpatients. Using survey data collected from 2018–2023 at the University of Chicago Medicine, researchers assessed technology access and use, self-management behaviors, self-efficacy, and eHL using the validated eHEALS scale.

Among 603 participants overall, 163 had COPD or asthma. This subgroup was more likely to be Black and female than participants without these conditions, but age, education, and average eHL were similar. Most participants said they searched for health information online and were interested in using technology for disease self-management. Among those with COPD/asthma, 65% felt their condition was well managed at home.

Higher eHL and smartphone ownership were significantly associated with greater willingness to use eHealth interventions such as health apps and video clips for self-management. In multivariable models, the strongest predictors of higher eHL were being able to use video without assistance and feeling comfortable using technology to manage chronic disease. Self-efficacy in managing COPD/asthma at home was also associated with eHL, knowledge of internet resources, and confidence using the internet for health decisions.

The study suggests that eHealth interventions for chronic disease should account for both digital access and eHealth literacy. Assessing these factors may help identify patients who are most likely to benefit from digital self-management resources and improve intervention design for people with asthma or COPD.
