Effective Group Learning for the Pediatric Hospital Medicine Boards

Pdf Summary
This project describes “Board Learning in Groups” (BLInG), a study program created by the Pediatric Hospital Medicine (PHM) division at Cleveland Clinic to help physicians prepare for the PHM boards. PHM became a recognized specialty in 2016, but most departmental staff had not completed PHM fellowship training when the curriculum began.

The team believed that a combination of group learning and independent study would be most effective. They conducted a needs assessment survey to identify topics staff found important or difficult. Based on the results, they built a monthly lecture series that covered both common PHM topics and less familiar subjects such as airway management and sedation for procedures. Specialists were invited to teach areas outside the group’s expertise, while department members taught other sessions. Presentation materials were saved in a shared folder so participants could review them during self-study.

The program was informed by evidence from other specialties showing that scheduled lectures, conference attendance, and board review questions can improve exam performance.

Outcomes were encouraging: the department’s 2019 PHM board pass rate was 86% (13 of 15 test-takers), which was comparable to the national PHM pass rate of 84% that year.

The authors conclude that BLInG was an effective educational strategy for a department without formal PHM fellowship training. They plan to continue monitoring board outcomes, track use of shared study materials, and gather feedback to improve the curriculum further.
