Effect of Round Notification With Text Message on Patients' Satisfaction

Pdf Summary
This retrospective cohort study examined whether real-time ward round notifications by text message (WR-SMS) improved inpatient experience in an acute medical ward at Seoul National University Bundang Hospital. Ward rounds are important in inpatient care, and patient participation is increasingly encouraged, but this can be difficult in acute settings.

The researchers compared patient-experience survey results from 2020, before WR-SMS was introduced, with results from 2021, after implementation. A total of 100 patients participated: 53 in 2020 and 47 in 2021.

The main findings were that the 2021 group reported significantly higher satisfaction with being informed about round schedules and felt more emotionally supported during admission. Scores for these two items improved from 3.43 to 3.89 for round schedule information, and from 3.49 to 3.87 for emotional support, both with statistically significant differences. Other survey items also tended to improve in 2021, although these changes were not statistically significant.

Overall, the study suggests that SMS-based ward round notifications may enhance inpatient satisfaction by making care more predictable and helping patients feel more supported emotionally. The authors conclude that using familiar communication tools such as text messaging may be a practical way to improve the patient experience in hospital settings.
