Drivers of Hospitalist Burnout
Drivers of Hospitalist Burnout
Back to course
Pdf Summary
This poster studied drivers of burnout and professional fulfillment among hospitalist physicians and advanced practice providers at eight academically affiliated hospital sites. The researchers surveyed demographics, satisfaction with factors linked to engagement or burnout, and personal burnout status. Burnout was measured using the Stanford Professional Fulfillment Index, and associations with demographic and work-related factors were analyzed using logistic regression.

Of 210 eligible people, 41 responded (19.5%). About one-third of respondents met criteria for burnout. The study found that relationship and parenting status were significantly associated with burnout: living with a significant other and living with dependent children appeared protective. Higher professional fulfillment was associated with male gender, age 40, and living with dependent children.

Among satisfaction drivers, “meaning I find in work” was the most commonly selected factor. Other positive drivers included control and flexibility, culture and values of the primary site, and social support/community. Among dissatisfaction drivers, “workload and job demands” was the most frequently selected, followed by work-life integration and meaning in work.

The authors concluded that burnout is present in a meaningful subset of this hospitalist population. They suggest that improving the positive aspects of work, especially meaning and fulfillment, while reducing workload-related stressors may help reduce burnout. They also emphasize that future interventions and further qualitative analysis are needed to better understand how institutional and individual reforms can improve professional well-being.
