Differences in Perception of Post-Hospitalization Covid-19 Management Among White, Black, and Hispanic Patients: The Post-Hospitalization Experience
Back to course
Pdf Summary
This survey examined differences in post-hospitalization COVID-19 experiences among White, Black, and Latinx patients in the U.S. An online Harris Poll survey collected responses from 601 adults hospitalized for COVID-19 between May and June 2021 (200 White, 200 Black, 201 Latinx). Responses were weighted to reflect U.S. population benchmarks.

The study found meaningful racial and ethnic differences in post-discharge experiences. Black and Latinx patients reported more difficulty with post-discharge care, including understanding medications, compared with White patients. They also showed different patterns of trust: Black and Latinx patients expressed less trust in healthcare professionals than White patients, but more trust in religious/church leaders.

When asked to rate their knowledge of COVID-19 after hospitalization, 89% of White patients rated their knowledge as “Excellent” or “Good,” compared with 77% of Black patients and 79% of Latinx patients. These gaps suggest that minority patients may have left the hospital with less confidence in their understanding of the disease and self-care needs.

The authors conclude that discharge care teams have an opportunity to reduce inequities by improving communication, discharge planning, and patient education. They suggest that patient-centered efforts to strengthen minority patients’ self-care knowledge may help reduce future disparities in health outcomes.
