The team developed a Triage Dashboard in the Epic EHR to improve inpatient triage by giving hospitalists real-time information on bed availability, staffing, census by care team, and pending admission requests. This was motivated by rising inpatient volume and geographic cohorting, which make bed assignment and patient routing more difficult. The dashboard combines multiple refreshable reports into one tool, including occupancy by medicine team and unit, expected admissions from the ED, direct admissions, ICU transfer requests, transfer center requests, and patients missing a first contact provider.<br /><br />The dashboard was released for general use in October 2023. Informal survey feedback suggested it was especially helpful for patient co-location and predicting patient flow, and 8 of 11 respondents said they planned to use it on future shifts. Usage logs also showed ongoing adoption by users outside the study team.<br /><br />Overall, the project shows that EHR-based dashboards can support more efficient and accurate triage by bundling bed capacity, staffing, and admission logistics in one place. The team plans to continue improving the dashboard, including adding patient MRNs and bed assignments for easier identification.
