Developing an Advanced Point of Care Ultrasound Track for Hospitalists
Back to course
Pdf Summary
This document describes the development of an advanced Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) training track for hospitalists. As more hospitalists learn basic POCUS, the authors identified a need for more advanced faculty development to support broader training and clinical use.

The advanced curriculum was created by faculty with POCUS curriculum development experience over six months and was offered alongside an established two-day basic POCUS course. Participants were self-selected and had to demonstrate prior experience through a pre-course evaluation. Learning was measured with standardized pre- and post-course assessments of learner perspectives, knowledge, and image acquisition skills.

Most participants already had substantial POCUS experience: 78% reported about 25 hours of prior training, and 83% were already teaching POCUS to others. After the course, participants improved in acquiring more challenging basic ultrasound views and in performing advanced techniques more quickly.

The curriculum focused on three main areas:
- Image Optimization: anatomy, tomographic planes, recognition of off-axis views, and better probe control
- Clinical Integration: using POCUS for syndromes such as hypotension, volume overload, hypoxia, and acute kidney injury
- Advanced Techniques: color and spectral Doppler, valve assessment, VTI, VExUS, and related clinical applications

The authors conclude that they successfully adapted the structure of a basic POCUS workshop into a novel advanced track that improved both knowledge and hands-on skills for experienced users.
