Demographic Mortality Trends Due to Chronic Kidney ...
Demographic Mortality Trends Due to Chronic Kidney Disease Related Atrial Fibrillation Among Adults in the United States From Year 2011-2020: CDC Wonder Database Survey Analysis
Back to course
Pdf Summary
This CDC WONDER database study examined U.S. mortality trends from atrial fibrillation (AF) associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD) among adults aged 35–85 from 2011 to 2020.

Using death certificate data, the authors calculated age-adjusted mortality rates (AAMRs) and annual percent changes, stratified by year, sex, race/ethnicity, and geography.

Key findings:
- A total of 110,733 deaths were linked to AF-related CKD during the study period.
- Overall mortality declined from 2011 to 2014, then rose steadily through 2020, reaching an AAMR of 10.3.
- Men had consistently higher mortality than women throughout the study.
- Non-Hispanic White adults had the highest mortality rate, followed by Non-Hispanic Black adults, while Hispanic and Asian/Pacific Islander groups had lower rates.
- Mortality was higher in the Midwest than in other U.S. regions.
- Nonmetropolitan areas had higher mortality than metropolitan areas.
- Several states in the upper 90th percentile had much higher rates than states in the lower 10th percentile.

The study concludes that AF-associated CKD mortality increased notably over time and showed clear demographic and regional disparities. The authors emphasize the need for stronger prevention, early detection, and management strategies, especially for older adults, men, non-Hispanic White populations, and residents of the Midwest and nonmetropolitan areas.
