This study evaluated a one-hour leadership workshop for 49 rising second-year residents in internal medicine, medicine-pediatrics, neurology, ophthalmology, and preliminary medicine. The workshop aimed to prepare residents for team leadership by teaching them how to define team expectations, identify qualities of effective resident leaders, and use the “ADAPT” feedback framework to give constructive feedback.<br /><br />Residents completed pre- and post-workshop surveys. Before the workshop, only 39% said they had received training on how to be an effective resident leader, although 75% already felt able to lead a feedback discussion. Just 47% felt prepared to be an upper-level resident. After the workshop, all 41 respondents (100%) agreed or strongly agreed that they were able to lead a feedback discussion, and 79% felt prepared to be an upper-level resident.<br /><br />The findings suggest that formal leadership training can improve residents’ confidence and perceived readiness for leadership roles. The authors conclude that residency programs should include leadership development in their curricula so residents feel better equipped to lead medical teams effectively.
