Creating a Multidisciplinary Oncology Hospitalist ...
Creating a Multidisciplinary Oncology Hospitalist Curriculum for Trainees
Back to course
Pdf Summary
This report describes the creation of a multidisciplinary oncology hospitalist curriculum for trainees at a 678-bed quaternary cancer center. The hospital uses oncology hospitalist teams to care for inpatients with solid tumor malignancies, with medical oncology and palliative care consulted as needed. Internal medicine residents and advanced practice fellows rotate on the service in two-week blocks, and the curriculum was designed to improve their ability to manage hospitalized patients with advanced cancer.

The teaching service includes two teams, each with an attending, an advanced practice provider, and a trainee. Daily rounds use a “discovery” model, with the trainee leading bedside discussions. To supplement bedside teaching, trainees attend six core didactic sessions covering advanced symptom management, cancer-directed therapies and toxicities, oncologic emergencies, palliative procedures, workup of new solid tumor diagnoses, and an introduction to radiation oncology. These 30-minute interactive lectures are delivered three times weekly by inpatient pharmacists, oncology fellows, and oncology hospitalist faculty.

To assess the curriculum, learners completed pre- and post-rotation surveys using a 5-point Likert scale. From July 2020 to June 2022, survey responses showed improvement across all areas measured. Trainees reported greater confidence in caring for oncology inpatients, teaching symptom management, explaining anti-cancer therapies and side effects, managing oncologic emergencies, knowing when to consult radiation oncology, and knowing when to consult palliative care.

The authors conclude that as hospital medicine becomes more specialized, a structured, curated curriculum can improve learner engagement and confidence. They highlight the value of multidisciplinary collaboration in achieving educational goals.
